The theme for this years event is Climate Resilience. Climate resilience means being prepared for and able to recover from extreme weather events and long-term climate change. In Aotearoa New Zealand, communities are being impacted by flooding, storms, droughts, and rising sea levels, which damage homes, infrastructure, and ecosystems. To bounce back, people are raising homes, restoring wetlands, upgrading infrastructure, strengthening emergency plans, and using mātauranga Māori to guide responses. Support is available through local councils, Civil Defence, marae, community centres, the Ministry for the Environment, and groups like the Red Cross. Students can take action by learning about local risks, making emergency plans, reducing waste, saving energy, and leading sustainability projects in schools and communities.
